![]() (We've asked BMW how this wheel-and-tire setup works with the all-wheel drive system, and will update this post when we hear back. A set of massive 21-inch wheels come standard, while Competition models offer a truly unusual staggered wheel setup, with 21s up front and 22s in the rear. The standard adaptive suspension comes with active roll stabilization to keep the SUVs level during hard cornering, taking in data from g-forces acting on the car, road surface conditions, and steering movements. Like the new M8, the system is adjustable for pedal feel, with Comfort and Sport modes. Bringing both SUVs to a stop is a new brake-by-wire system operating six-piston calipers with 15.6-inch rotors up front, and single piston calipers with 15-inch rotors in the rear. BMW says power is sent to the rear wheels in normal driving conditions, shifting to the front axle when traction falters. Those brutal acceleration numbers come thanks to an eight-speed automatic transmission and a newly retuned xDrive all-wheel drive system paired with an active rear differential. Opting for the Competition pack adds another 17 horsepower, drops the 0-60 time to 3.7 seconds, and raises the top speed limiter to 177 mph. It makes 600 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque in base trim, enough to thrust either SUV from 0-60 mph in just 3.8 seconds, and hit an electronically-limited top speed of 155 mph. The new direct-injected S63 4.4-liter twin-turbo engine has air-to-water intercooling, variable valve timing, and cross-bank exhaust manifolds to improve airflow away from the engine. The X5 M and X6 M are now in their third generation, packed with a whole bunch of new stuff to make it possible for these bulky SUVs to embarrass some of your favorite sports cars. ![]() For the 2020 model year, the two big-power SUVs bring up to 617 horsepower in Competition trim, thanks to the twin-turbo V-8 from the M5 Competition. That's why we're impressed by BMW's newest M cars: The X5 M and X6 M. A five-seat SUV that can tow a trailer and packs more than 600 horsepower has got to count for something.
